The green triangle where Osterley Rd meets the Grove

Reported via desktop in the Grass cutting query category anonymously at 18:57, Tuesday 27 May 2025

Sent to Hounslow Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7624822.

This morning men with strimmers cut the grass. They left the cuttings in heaps here and there. Yesterday thanks to the rain that triangle was looking a bit green with pops of yellow from dandelions and buttercups. Today it looks a mess. Those cuttings will rot in situ providing nourishment for the grass and reducing space for wild flowers. No one can fail to notice that in dry weather the grass is brown and the only green patches are wild flowers. It clearly tells you; wild flowers are resilient, they don't need much, definitely not compost and rich soil. They flourish in poor soil. They are native . They are meant to be there. If a sensible approach is adopted. NO cut May observed, hopefully followed by No Cut June and when the grass is cut ALL cuttings removed. Wild flowers will flourish and the grass will weaken. Colour for all of us but most importantly food for wildlife. Please adopt a sensible grass cutting routine. If there are any concerns about grass flopping over the edge on to the road then just cut 50cm all around (and remove the grass cuttings). The dead shrivelled leaves on the new saplings are so evident. How very sad. Not even into summer and those saplings are not just showing stress but dying. If there really is a watering crew they clearly aren't doing their job. Young trees in their first year need a lot of water to establish. Their roots need to grow and go deep. Last year, same story. Lovely young saplings, 6 of them, burst into leaf in early spring. Not brilliabt but keen to grow. They just needed water. Same story. Little or no watering and 5 died. One survived. When we had some rain late summer it put on fresh leaves, showing it had rooted and with a semblance of care could thrive. Unfortunately someone had other ideas. All 6 were replaced. 5 dead and one live tree. Makes no sense to me. This year 6 new trees and already before the end of May dying. Please stop the indifference and adopt a constructive approach to working with nature.
